Trying to keep a set of tyres as a set.

Following on from recent threads about tyres I thought I would share my biggest bugbear about tyres.

So you get a new car or have a car with a full set of tyres - Brand, model and size all the same. A set of five or six tyres for when you need to take two spares along.

After a year or two you have a flat and destroy a tyre due to damage or sidewall cut. So now you want to replace.

It has happened to me a few times that when this happens you go looking to replace what you got on your vehicle with like for like but the tyre is no longer available or the tread pattern has changed. So now you buy the closest tyre you can get to your set so that you are back up to the required number but you have one odd tyre.(obviously the right size)

This totally hacks me off. I like all my tyres to be the same size, brand and pattern (model). It just gives me peace of mind, makes rotating easier and subdues my OCD.

I’ve been known to sell a car because of this.

Is this also a concern of yours or do you just run odd tyres all over the place, front, back, left and right?

What do you do?

I'm the same. I have never mixed tyres - though I've never sold a vehicle BECAUSE of tyres .

I cannot believe Andreas called this Thread "Trying to keep a set of tyres as a set."
It was a GOLDEN opportunity to launch it under the banner "Tyre Naaier Tendencies"...

#disappointed

I had BFG KO2’s ….. I never had a puncture.

Problem solved.

The end.

Simply a case of not trying hard enough Kurt.

Probably was the case Andreas.

To be fair i do share your OCD concerns with mismatched tyres, at least on the same axle.

I’m not that concerned with differing tread depths as much though, but tyre model/type certainly.

I also think a lot of the decisions made are budget related because it’s almost a grudge purchase to buy a second nee tyre if one was damaged and replace a very decent tyre.

So the poverty stricken okes (like Manny) will drive with whatever tyre he/she can find and let the OCD settle for a while until their ship sails in again.

I have made peace with it. Well on Swambos car for now.

One rear Pirelli runflat destroyed. Had to get a replacement immediately because no spare due to BMW product offering.

So I have take what is available. Conti. And will have to take 2.

But every time I see those tyres I do stop and think. Then I stop thinking.......

Adding to the problems, if you have an AWD or permanent 4x4 (Like my Tuna) you should be rotating every 5000kms to keep the tyres wearing about the same, at worst every 10 000kms depending on how hard you are on the tyres.

On a 2WD car I do not mind having 2 pairs of tyres, as Kurt said, same brand, model, age per axle, but on the Tuna I have sold 3 loose tyres and replaced with a new set in order to keep the brand, wear, age all the same... I too have a little OCD...

I ensure flexibility in spares etc so Im not easily cornered into buying exotic junk, at short notice, from opportunist dealers.

Ive always used BFG (pref) or GYW and try keep matching tyres
on each axle ( best set at front ) ... but BFG K02s (235/85/16s) now at circa R3.2k each is excessive so will probly not buy again except at discount, Black Friday or sale ( ... maybe from looters ? )
My trailer wheels/tyres also match car in type and size (and span) ... so all interchangeable.
Near Joburg I now carry 1 spare in vehicle and 1 or 2 on trailer. Family or Uber will have to deliver extra tyre on call if necessary.
Further afield I carry 2 for vehicle and 2 on trailer.
Its overkill but my trailer is too light with only one spare.
Maybe on longer trips I will carry a loose tyre on the roof instead of second spare for car.
