4x4 Action Group

Many years ago I was driving our Pajero through Baviaanskloof on the gravel road section on the western side, and we stopped for a quick snack break. We were towing our Metalian.

I heard a leaking tyre and checked it out. Right rear tyre. Tried two snot plugs but the cut was too big, a gash about 1cm wide was in the middle of the tread on a fairly new Hankak Dynapro ATM tyre.

I changed to the spare and went to Trentyre in Oudtshoorn the next day (after camping for the night). Cost me about R320 to repair with a gater plug as it was a Sunday and we had to call them out to help us.

To this day I will never recommend a Hankak to anyone that does off-roading or drives slightly loaded on gravel, the carcass is just too weak IMHO. On road they are fine.

PS - I deflated slightly for Baviaans, but because I was towing I think the rear tyres were at 2 bar, maybe too high for gravel?

... some years ago I was on a trip
in my 1981 2-door Range Rover Classic
... on my way to the Kalagadi with wife & kids.
We decided to do an anti-clockwise circuit from Joburg,
but half way between Hotazel and Van Steynsrus
the car swerved almost uncontrollably as if in soft sand...
there was then a loud clang and some crunching breaking
sounds etc ...
Needing to stop quickly I veered into a bank of sand.
Once stopped I got out and found that the rear prop-shaft
universal had failed and the flailing prop had punched a hole in the rear seat metal floor-board. It was also evident that there was only one bolt holding the front end of the drivers side radial-arm.
It was one of those times that warranted a Texan or Camel Plain ... to gather ones thoughts...
It was difficult to walk on let alone lie on the gravel which was so hot.
Got underneath and detached the prop-shaft at the front flange and continued on our way in Front Wheel Drive only. Got to Twee Rivieren and drove around for a few days ... fortunately its not too hilly or difficult as the Classic was seriously disabled.
Continued down to Upington and as we drove in there was a Prop-Shaft Workshop and he made up a new one for us.

Before the trip I took the Classic into a Randburg
suspension guy who fitted some rear shocks and springs.
I think for some reason that loud mouthed Ozzie loosened and never tightened the front radial bolts ...

Chas and Kurtie, please enlighten us how you did the roadside repairs?

I didn’t need to, I drove Jap Crap and the Trentyre was actually on the left hand side of a road, so that’s where the roadside repairs were done.

Jaar 2000 in Mosambiek het my ford courier se master cylinder op clutch se seels gelek en kon dit darm ook self reg maak en verder gery en vakansie gehou.

Ek dink ons jonger geslag (my ingesluit) weet min van voertuie self regmaak. My pa is ook een van daai manne wat enige iets langs die pad kan regmaak.
