So it's raining here and the evening is kind of slow so I'm watching the chaps doing their thing.

What I've seen is that Anthony has open diffs on his Patrol.

I appreciate the fact that you need more skill/experience to do the rough stuff like this.

But why would you not put in at least one locker?

What I've seen is more spinning/trail damage as well as speed required for some obstacles.

I'm a wuss and prefer to idle up everything as slow as possible. This means I probably engage both lockers more than is necessary....

Heck, I'd probably engage both to climb the kerb at the mall - if we had such a thing in Hennenman!

I'm not criticisizing Anthony in any way - no doubt he's light years ahead of me ito 4x4 knowledge!

Just trying to understand the reasoning.

Surely he's limited by having no lockers at all?

Last time I drove with Anthony in his Patrol, he had a rear locker. Unless I am mistaken (highly likely)

Look, these guys know what they are doing and are WAY more qualified than what I am.

But surely there are trails that can't be done without a diff lock?

Therefore this must be a limiting factor?

Shane, this is a very good thing you are pondering on. Very very good.
So, less than two months ago I bought myself a new Jimny, with my wife's blessing off course. Then I started looking at the wee rubber under the Jimny and decided they are not very manly. Nor are they very grippy. So I mentioned to the Wife that I will have to get mud tyres, very very soon. You know what she said? "If you wanted a car with mud tyres you should have bought a car with mud tyres". That is what she said.
I think this might have been what happened to Anthony. He wanted to get lockers but his wife told him, if you wanted a car with lockers you should have bought a car with lockers.

Where do one stop with the mods? When are the mods so much and so good that there is no challenge on a trail anymore? One see the guys running almost monster trucks and nothing can stop them. No effort needed to go through an obstacle. No choosing a line.
Then a guy comes in a Samurai and he struggles and he chooses another line and he adds some momentum and on his third try he gets through. And he feels good and the guys shouts and the girls clap hands and the Samurai Man have achieved more than the monster truck did because he fought the obstacle and won. For the monster truck the obstacle just surrenders.

Or something like that. I don't know much about these things.

Yes. That is so. But our wife's do not want us to have fun, especially if it cost a lot of money.

I get it - the less mods the more skill required.

Being a stingy bugger - I'd rather be slightly over modded and have no vehicle damage - than more standard and pick up dings and stuff.

I guess the more I 4x4, the more I'll come to accept that damage is a given sooner or later.

I have nothing but respect for those who drive fairly standard vehicles.

More mods can certainly make up for less skill.

I rely on my mods. Makes me feel comfortable.

He definitely has no lockers now, my comment was that maybe he removed his locker. But if he came on here to clarify, then we will all know

Hi the standard diff lock on the Patrol is one of its few weak points and Anthony has broken his so often he does not want to fix it again.
