4x4 Action Group

Gents,

Forgive a humble poepol for asking this, but I have had some issues of late with my D23 when engaging 4H - it makes a clunk sound sometimes when moving.

First thought was that it may be the CV joint and oom Grips directed my attention to the auto locking hubs that may be the issue.

So, while in 2H, I jacked up the right front wheel to check if there was any play in the CV. I rotated the wheel forwards and backwards and noted that the half shaft turned with the wheel. I then got underneath the car and noticed the front propshaft turning as well.

Does this mean that the hubs doesn't disengage and that they have remained locked?

I took the car out in the field and switched to 4H but I swear sometimes I don't hear the hubs engaging (or disengaging for that matter). No 4wd error messages and it switches over to 4Lo without hassels.

If the auto lock hubs don't engage, then the clunk sound I hear could be from transmission wind up?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Something sounds wrong.
But I'm still trying to understand why you bought a Nissan.

I gave in to peer pressure from the other 5 Navara drivers in the country.

I know with the Hardbody you had to reverse to disengage the auto lock hubs. when in 2H.

The distance did differ from time to time. Perhaps this is the issue here.

I tried that already. I did own the NP300 prior to the Navara and initially thought the same as you did.

The owner's manual suggests that if the hubs do not disengage, you can try to reverse and when I did it, you can clearly hear the hubs disengaging. Now, even if I reverse, I don't hear them at all.

Are you sure it has come out of 4H fully?

Not a Nissan fundi other than still owning a 200SX.

But my 5c. I don't hear my Paj engaging and disengaging. Maybe because I do it on the flying and and hardly ever when standing still. However when I engage 4L or 4llc I sometimes hear a clunk, and feel a slight movement. This will not be the case when I do it again the next day.

Summary I never hear a clunk when engaging 4H.

Only one hub could be stuck.
So when you turn the wheel you get drive through the diff. Jack up both wheels and do the test again.

The hubs disengage simply to save a bit of drag and fuel.

They don’t really need to . If it’s in 2WD mode they are not linked to the rear at all. It all turns anyway - theoretically disengaging the front hubs from the diff means the front diff and prop don’t turn , but there is enough drag to get them turning .

There are always going to be clunks when you try and align several dog sets, which is what happens when engaging / disengaging the front diff...

I shouldn’t worry about it - the volume knob on the radio might help !
