BFG is too off-roading, as what Billy Ray Cyrus is to country music. He’s about as country as a bag of wet mice.

I have yet to find an AT with good grip in the wet on tar.

Also I have not been swayed over to BF`s by the name brand or any other reason than my own practical experience with off road tires.
As I have said many times in the past we have 4x4`s with a wide variety of tires.

We certainly does not all have the same application for our 4x4 tires. Many of the tires named in this thread failed me miserably. Have three 4x4`s in the business and another 8 owned between me and my sons. I working as an Electrical contractor since 1995. Building overhead lines where no roads go. Doing business on most mines in close vicinity. Travel thousands of km`s of the worst dirt roads in the country. I knows what works for me.

Have a set of Grabbers on my business Ford Ranger that have done around 20k km. Two punctures later and I am convinced I should have spend the extra money on BF`s. It had a set of BF`s which run flawless for 85k km.

Then as said the Mines have test all AT`s and BF`s came out tops. Anyone visiting Sishen mine please note that 90% of their fleet is running on BF`s.
Will take some pic`s of very expensive 35`s and 33`s with side wall cuts.

I have witnessed Hankooks with serious sidewall cuts on rocky trails.

Yes BF`s might not be the best sand tire but are very good in everything else.
O ja the Cooper Discoverer SST on Christophers 2.8i Supra powered Hilux will be lucky to see 50k km.

I will play safe and stick to my BF`s
You will never find me without Stroh or a 4x4 :D

There’s such a wide variety of good AT tyres on the market that are all much of a muchness, so it’s difficult to single one out.

Off the top of my head Hankooks or Grabbers.

I’ve had BFG ATs & they were a disaster, like the tests suggest. Didn’t they come 14th or 15th in that tyre shootout?

Expensive to buy, poor in the wet, side wall too inflexible, won’t stay on the rims. Rather fit a HT because they are better.
I suppose Neil, in your opinion, and in the context of where you use them most (sand) at 0.nothing bars.. then you might have a point, about the Older BF's, but, the newer ones are quite a major improvement, seriously and I dont think you you can comment if they are or are not... until you have had some experience with the newer ones.

In the mean time, us here in more Africanated parts of South Africa.. with more sharp little stones and rocks that cause punctures and sidewall damage on high speed gravel work and when traversing rocky areas in anything other than BFgs... will keep on saying the following:

You can have BFg's or you can have punctures... You choose

Both the Hankooks and the Grabbers are very prone to punctures up here....

Some tyres are less prone to punctures than others, but none are so "safe" with regard to punctures and sidewall damage as what the BF's are

Hedgehog, you can throw Cooper ST Maxx into the same category of “strong” tyre. Both have a very inflexible almost impenetrable sidewall construction for heavy load and off-road use.

I fully agree Andrew. Some guys just have easier ways with words than me. Very nice piece of writing. :D

Absolutely, but, they do not have the lifespan of the BFs.

My wife has a hobby where she experiments with growing vegetables. One of the methods of growing potatoes involves using old car tyres as reciprocals.

She had old 2 BFG & 2 old Good Year Wrangler tyres.

When it can time to harvest, the potatoes in the Goodyear were 100% fine, but the ones in the BFG were all soft & their peels just fell off.

But I suppose she could sell the BFGs for more?

Just show you how tough BF`s are clearly not vented as good as the Wranglers from multiple punctures.

Ok, so someone I know, in fact most of you know him, just bought 5 BF’s for the same price as 4 Cooper STMaxx.
So BF’s win for price

Now. The tires he replaced? Yip. It was Cooper STMaxx.

How many Kms did he get with that set before the BF change? He got 85000 problem free kms

I would venture a guess and say that the STMaxx and the BF’s would get roughly the same mileage
