Personally, I do not regard a route that has been "built" using earth moving equipment as an off-road trail.

Reenen's example is a real trail - it was established by driving up the mountain, picking a drivable route and with minor adjustments to the natural lay of the land, making it passable. Any "route" that was created by digger loaders or other earth moving equipment is a road - sometimes not an easy road to travel by, but still a road.

I agree with Reenen and others - permanent alterations of a trail to suit your individual vehicle or group, is not acceptable. There are always alternatives if a specific obstacle is beyond your own or your vehicle's capability, even if it means reversing halfway down the mountain to a point where you can turn around.
Maybe I'm missing the point here, but is that not how Briekmerk materialized. It's man made.

Yes it is, but that is not what the question on this thread is.

"Briekmerk" is an obstacle on 4x4 route, not a trail, from what I gather.

The question was... if you can't do the obstacle, may you change it so that you can?

Changing an obstacle permanently, by breaking rocks and removing boulders is not acceptable unless it's done by the owner while establishing the route/trail, IMHO

If there are obstacles in a section of the trail that could trip up some drivers or them and their vehicles, there should preferably be an alternate route for them to take after a few tries.
If there is no alternate, then a few sand bags or rocks packed to help them across is a temporary allowed procedure. Breaking rocks or using tools on the route is not on.
