Turns out the "ports" on the aircleaner box are 50mm so making up an intake extension will be fairly easy.

Hair dryer element in air intake line
... but not when Im nearby ...
When I did bikes up as youngster had a
1945 BSa Bantam 125cc that had opposite
problem : carb heated up from cylinder head
and overheated the petrol and it pinked out
all the time so I put thick gasket.
Is there no heat to speak of in your inlet manifold thats insulated out by flange gasket ?

The intake manifold is water heated on these motors.
I was hoping that that would be sufficient to warm the carb but unfortunately not.
The carb as it is now is just to far removed from the heat source and as you said it is also insulated by the gasket and spigot hose.
